ENECHANGE Growth Story Announced by the University of Cambridge as a Cambridge Spin-out Success Story

ENECHANGE Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director & CEO: Yohei Kiguchi, Representative Director & COO: Ippei Arita) announces that the transformation of SMAP ENERGY LIMITED (Head Office: London, England; CEO: Yohei Kiguchi) into a wholly-owned subsidiary that was announced on Friday, March 19, has been officially announced by the University of Cambridge as one of its successful venture business cases.

ENECHANGE, a success story of a University of Cambridge spin-off

Both ENECHANGE and SMAP ENERGY are spin-off venture businesses from the University of Cambridge, created by Yohei Kiguchi through his doctoral research into electricity data analysis at the university. With ENECHANGE’s listing on the Mothers Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (December 2020) and SMAP ENERGY now being a wholly-owned subsidiary, the following announcement has been made by Cambridge Enterprise, the intellectual property department of the University of Cambridge.

Purpose of purchasing SMAP ENERGY

To define the company’s business field as energy technology and become a category leader in that field. Starting in spring 2021, a succession of reforms to the energy system in Japan are scheduled, and the market, including for VPPs (virtual power plants) is expected to expand. As this happens, the application of demand response technology and the use of energy data should further expand business opportunities. Making SMAP ENERGY, with its global network, mainly in Europe, and strengths in analysis technologies for energy data, a wholly-owned subsidiary allows ENECHANGE to create business opportunities domestically as well as aim to achieve a carbon-free society by accelerating its global reach, such as promoting business at overseas sites.
