Survey result: over 90% aware of power shortage warning concept, majority to proactively save electricity in future events
ENECHANGE Ltd. conducted a “Questionnaire Survey on power crunch alert and power shortage warning” among subscribers to the ENECHANGE e-mail magazine. The survey revealed changes in awareness and approaches after June 27, when the government issued the electricity supply-demand crunch alert for the first time this year.
Survey Results Summary
- Awareness of power shortage warning increased to 95% after the first issuance
- 74% of respondents, including those in and out of the target area, cooperate in saving electricity when power crunch alert/power shortage warning are issued.
- About 80% say they will save electricity when power crunch alert/power shortage warning are issued
- About 70% get information from TV and online news
1.Awareness of power shortage warning increased to 95% after the first issuance
On June 27, 2022, for the first time, a power shortage warning was issued for the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) areas. While 43% of respondents to a survey conducted prior to the issuance of the alert were aware of the warning, the percentage increased by 52 points to 95% in the survey conducted after the issuance of the alert. A power crunch alert is issued when the electricity reserve ratio falls below 3%, and a power shortage warning is issued when it is expected to fall below 5%.
2.74% of respondents, including respondents bothin and out of the target area, cooperate in saving electricity when power crunch alert/power shortage warnings are issued.
We found that 43% of respondents within the target area and 31% of those outside the target area cooperated in saving electricity. Regarding specific ways to save electricity, “turning off unused lights” was the most common response, at 75%. This was followed by “changing the temperature setting of the air conditioner” at 55% and “reducing the time spent using the air conditioner” at 33%, indicating that many people worked on saving electricity through their air conditioner.
3.About 80% say they will save electricity when power crunch alert/power shortage warning are issued
Regardless of alert or warning, about 80% of the respondents answered that they would cooperate in saving electricity when a request for saving electricity was issued due to a power supply and demand crunch, and only 8% of the respondents answered that they would not cooperate in saving electricity in any case. While 32% of the respondents answered that the reason for not cooperating in saving electricity was because it would be inconvenient or troublesome, many of the other respondents (28%) said that they “usually save electricity” and “I try not to waste electricity on a daily basis, so I can’t do it any more”.
4.About 70% get information from TV and online news
When asked how they obtained information on tight power supply and demand, about 40% of those in their 20s and younger obtained information from TV and online news. We found that most people in their 30s to 50s use TV and online news as sources of information, and 17% refer to SMS bulletins from electric power companies.
