ENECHANGE EV Charge Introduces New Charging and Billing System for Light EVs
ENECHANGE Ltd. announces the introduction of a new feature that allows users to charge according to their charging output, with the aim of promoting the use of its EV charging service, ENECHANGE EV Charge, which has expanded to all 47 prefectures.
Background and Objectives
ENECHANGE has been actively installing 6kW regular chargers since the EV charging service business started in November 2021. 6kW output chargers can complete charging in approximately half the time of the 3.2kW output regular chargers that have been widely used in Japan. As batteries continue to increase in capacity, EV drivers can efficiently charge while limiting charging time.
In 2022, which we consider the “first year of EVs,” the EV market rapidly expanded, with combined annual new vehicle sales of BEVs and PHEVs reaching a record high of 95,426 vehicles*. In addition, the Nissan Sakura/Mitsubishi EK Cross EV was named Japan Car of the Year for 2022-2023, and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 was named Import Car of the Year, making last year a symbolic year for EV proliferation. As the EV market becomes more active and diversified, there is now an increase in light EVs with small battery capacity EVs and PHEVs, some of which only support a 3.2kW charge output. To meet the needs of EV drivers with these vehicles, ENECHANGE EV Charge has decided to introduce a new fee system.
*Total sales volume from January to December 2022 according to the “Passenger Car Sales by Fuel Type” of the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the “New Light Vehicle Sales by Alias” of the Japan Mini Vehicles Association.
About the newCharge based on charging output function
This new system automatically determines the amount of electricity output and calculates a new rate when charging vehicles that do not support 6kW output, such as light EVs and PHEVs. Until now, rate were calculated based on charging time regardless of the amount of power output, but with the introduction of this new function, charging can now be provided at appropriate rates to all EV drivers, including those who only use vehicles with a 3.2kW charging output. As before, both EV drivers and EV charger owners can use the new functionality without hassle and peace of mind.
