ENECHANGE-sponsored net zero doctoral research consortium FIBE3 CDT named recipient of major UKRI grant
ENECHANGE Ltd. (hereafter, the “Company”) is pleased to announce the successful funding of the University of Cambridge’s EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Unlocking Net Zero (FIBE3 CDT), for which the Company is an industry sponsor. The consortium has been named as one of the recipients of a UK-wide grant worth over 1 billion GBP in total from UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), the UK government’s research funding body. The allocated funding will help create more than 70 fully-funded studentships over the next five years, all dedicated to research on net zero infrastructure.
Background
In order to reach net zero, more research is needed on current and new technologies, as well as the development of tools to underpin the new infrastructure needed for a net zero future. FIBE3 CDT, a doctoral research center at the University of Cambridge focused on net zero infrastructure, plans to address this through its student-led research, with relevant PhD topics generated from the consortium. It is underpinned by the FIBE3 Roadmap, which is comprised of four research focus themes: current and disruptive/new technologies; radical circularity and whole life approach; AI-driven digitalization and data; and risk-based systems thinking and connectivity.
FIBE3 CDT is the successor to FIBE CDT and FIBE2 CDT, research consortiums at the University of Cambridge that were based on a research training model focusing on depth, breadth and cross-disciplinarity. In FIBE3, industry and collaboration has been added as a theme in the FIBE3 CDT training. Over 30 industry partners joined to support the consortium, and the full list of industry partners is visible on the FIBE3 CDT website: https://www.net-zero-fibe-cdt.eng.cam.ac.uk/partners/IndustryPartners.
ENECHANGE joined the FIBE3 consortium as one of these industry partners, and as a company which also has its roots at the University of Cambridge, ENECHANGE is pleased to play a part in FIBE3 CDT’s development and success.
Overview of the UKRI EPSRC grant
The UKRI announced a record 1 billion GBP investment in 65 Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) centers for doctoral training (CDTs). FIBE3 CDT was one of the recipients, with 8.1 million GBP in funding allocated to the project through this grant.
ENECHANGE is one of the more than 30 industry partners that backs FIBE3 CDT through sponsorship, and played an active role in bolstering the organization with its grant application. The support from industry sponsors was an important factor in the successful application for this grant, and ENECHANGE is proud to count itself among FIBE3 CDT’s sponsors. Going forward, ENECHANGE will continue to support FIBE3 CDT and is excited about the possibilities that may arise from the consortium’s research.

“We are thrilled to participate as an industry sponsor in this Cambridge-led consortium. Our roots as a company stem from the UK and the University of Cambridge, and I completed my own doctoral education with the engineering department as well. Our story has come full circle, and we are proud to now be supporting the type of world-leading research that produced our own success as a company.”
