ENECHANGE improves convenience by installing EV charging ports in rental condominiums　Strongly encourages EV shift with plan for zero-cost installation in shared and private parking

Background

The government has set a goal of increasing the ratio of electric vehicles (EVs) in new passenger car sales to 100% by 2035, and has indicated that it wants to expand EV charging infrastructure to 150,000 fast charging ports and Level 2 charging ports by 2030, a plan that is indispensible for the spread of EVs and PHVs. In particular, the public and private sectors are focusing on charging in housing complexes, with the national government and some municipalities expected to increase their budgets for subsidies. Having more charging ports available at condominiums ought to be a priority, as it greatly increases convenience for residents and may also improve property value. Yet, although the number of charging ports  installed is on the rise, they still account for less than 1% of all condominium units sold. Many EV owners living in condominiums feel that their “freedom of housing choice” is being curtailed by the fact that few properties have EV charging ports installed.

Less than 1% of new condominiums in Japan have chargers installed.

At this time, none of the tenants in the rental condominiums where EV charging ports have been installed own EVs themselves. However, as a result of the condominium owners’ introduction of the EV charging ports in anticipation of the full-scale spread of EVs in the future, residents have reported that they are actually considering switching to EVs or PHVs. Anecdotally, the presence of EV charging infrastructure may therefore encourage the shift to EVs.

Demand for installation in condominiums is growing

In addition to the standard plan, in November 2022, we announced the “Condominium (Shared Parking) Zero Plan,” a plan specifically designed for condominiums, where ENECHANGE EV Charge charging ports can be installed in shared parking lots at zero cost. All installation costs, monthly costs, and electricity costs are not borne by the condominium management association by utilizing a government subsidy. In March 2023, we announced a new “Condominium (Private Parking) Zero Plan” that can be introduced in private parking lots, thereby further promoting the development of EV charging ports in condominiums by increasing the number of installation plan options. In March and April 2023, the average number of inquiries regarding the installation of EV charging ports in multi-family dwellings increased to almost twice the level recorded in November 2022. In response, we are proceeding with the widespread installation of EV charging ports while conducting careful interviews and on-site surveys. We will continue to promote the development of appropriate EV charging infrastructure to encourage the shift to EVs promoted by the national and local governments.
